Bringing individuals and organizations together to affect public policy issues in New York City

The New York Women's Agenda (NYWA) is a coalition of women professionals and community activists who support the diversity and interests of New York Women through collaboration, advocacy and education. NYWA’s mission is to advocate and collaborate for the interests of New York women in public policy decisions that affect our lives; to increase women’s participation in public policy discussions on economic, political and social issues; and to support member organizations in their individual efforts.

2008 EQUAL PAY DAY RALLY & CAMPAIGN!

speaking NYWA's Equal Pay Coalition NYC rallied in force outside City Hall on April 17th and called for the passage of resolutions in favor of the NYS Fair Pay Act and comparable federal legislation. Moving inside, leaders and experts offered testimony in Council Chambersat a hearing sponsored by Councilwoman Helen Sears, Chair of the Women's Issues Committee and resolution sponsor.

Dressed in red in recognition of Equal Pay Day - and seeing red becauseof the recent NYS Senate tactics to derail the passage of a comprehensive Pay Equity law - advocates demanded that NYS remedy this continuing economic discrimination. While the bill languishes in Albany, we will urge the City Council to take action by passing local pay equity measures. Our continuing efforts to work with the City Council are even more urgent because the US Senate recently failed to pass the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, leavingwomen more vulnerable to pay inequities.

This second Equal Pay Day celebration was bigger and better than last year's and brought together 25+ leading women's organizations to speak loudly in one voice for pay equity. Special thanks from NYWA GovernmentAffairs Co-chairs Joan D. Firestone and Beverly Neufeld to all who attended, sent emails, made calls, testified and made the day a great success! Press coverage included: Village Voice, WBAI, WNYC, and Huffington Post. To join this ongoing campaign or for more informationabout Pay Equity, click here.

Dear Girls and Women:

With the ongoing outbreak of gender roles, women are becoming more and more independent. At the same time they are becoming increasingly responsible for their economic well being. It is essential for girls to learn the basics of money management early enough to became savvy women. Women often relied on their husbands or even parents to take care of their finances. Being confronted with divorce, widowhood or other changes in life they need to become financially literate. Especially being a women entrepreneur it is important to know your Finance ABC’s.

The New York Women’s Agenda and sponsor Manhattan Chamber of Commerce recognize these changes and wants to encourage women to take advantage of the many resources about finance in New York City. We want girls, women, and women-business-owners to further their financial literacy education in order to become more financially secure and to be able to pass on their knowledge about money management. We have compiled this Guide and corresponding website to bring all of this information together in one place, saving you time and creating transparency. This Guide gives you an overview of the various possibilities to find the information about money management appropriate for your needs.

We hope this is helpful to you!

Sincerely,

Sandra Eberhard
