Arts & Culture Committee Position Statement
The New York Women's Agenda Arts & Culture Committee believes that
the arts are central to the life of our city. It further believes
that the city's arts and culture should be available to all its
citizens - that all should be able to enjoy and benefit from the
incomparable richness of New York's cultural resources.
We are particularly concerned with the economic health and stability of smaller and mid-sized arts organizations which presently are eligible for only
a very small percentage of the overall city arts budget. We therefore
endorse efforts to increase support for these organizations - which
are responsible for much of the diversity and creativity to be found
in the arts - thereby enhancing the overall quality of the life of our
great city.
A second
area of our focus is arts education. There is considerable evidence
that arts activity and instruction in the schools - at all age levels
- facilitates learning, increases creativity, and fosters discipline;
it opens the mind to alternative ways of learning and encourages receptivity
to new ideas. We support programs that enable children within the public
school system to actively engage in arts education programs.
A third
area of concern is the availability of health insurance to unaffiliated
artists. We support efforts to reach out to artists and make known to
them existing resources for insurance coverage.
The Arts
& Culture Committee's Arts Advocacy Breakfast, held last February, brought
together representatives of 75 NYWA member organizations with Peter
Vallone and members of the City Council to impress upon the Council
the importance of continued and increased support for the arts organizations
and arts education programs in New York City. The success of that event
has impelled us to organize this Advocacy Breakfast.
