The 2000 Elly Grant Awardees

Center for the Elimination of Violence in the Family

To teach economic literacy to women residing in their shelters as well as the nonresidential survivors of domestic violence. A five-session course in basic money management skills will be offered to 120 women. The bilingual “Making Every Dollar Count” curriculum covers how to budget income, pay bills, stretch dollars and opening and maintaining checking and savings accounts.

Girls, Inc.

To support five sessions of two Mother/Daughter workshop series addressing issues of sexuality education and economic literacy for women and their daughters. One workshop series will help mothers and their daughters’ ages 9 to 11 talk more comfortably about sexual information, values and behavior. The other seeks to enhance communication and listening skills by engaging mothers and daughters in activities and questions related to economic literacy.

The Lower East Side Girls Club

Sweet Things, a highly successful entrepreneurial training and baking program, teaches girls from age 13 to 17, how to bake, package, sell, and advertise their own product. They also operate Joy’s Juice Joint/Study Café, a place where girls can do their homework, get a healthy snack and a dinner on those days when specific activities take place. The Elly grant will enable Sweet Things participants to engage in more comprehensive entrepreneurial training, mentor new recruits to the program, and receive a modest hourly stipend for their work.

New Georges

New Georges, a theatre company devoted to women playwrights and directors, maintains The Room, an 850 square foot loft space for creation of new plays and support of collaborations among women artists. The grant will provide ongoing support for its program of readings, workshops, presentations, classes, as well as rehearsal space for affiliated artists.

Professional Women in Construction

Three Technical Assistance Workshops will help approximately 150 women and minority-owned companies apply for government certification in order to obtain publicly funded contracts. The workshops will review the criteria to qualify as a W/MBE company and help guide entrepreneurs and owners of women and minority businesses through the cumbersome application process. The grant will enable PWC to offer scholarships to 15 women at each session.

Suitability

To provide “job-readiness” workshops and new business attire to 20 women in the Serendipity Program, a residential facility for former drug abuse offenders. Suitability’s comprehensive program of educational and vocational training addresses basic issues of employability and job retention, focusing on communication, personal presentation, attitude, self-worth, and competence.

Visions

Funds will be used to pilot an Exercise for Health Project that combines both strength-training exercise and aerobic exercise to benefit blind and visually impaired women. Approximately 15 to 20 adult and elderly women between the ages of 18-80 will receive fitness training 2 days a week for 10 weeks. The overall goal, to promote physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle, will enhance their quality of life.

Women’s Venture Fund, Inc.

The Elly grant will support WVF’s Circle for Leadership curriculum to help a group of its borrowers to become active leaders in their communities by representing the voice of low-income women entrepreneurs at public forums. Ten women will receive training in public speaking, networking, and personal presentation, as well as training in advocacy on community development. The goal is to disseminate the message of micro-enterprise as a catalyst for change in urban communities.

YWCA of the City of New York

The Elly grant will support the Encore Program, which provides post-mastectomy exercises and a supportive environment to sustain and improve women’s general wellness. The ongoing Encore Program meets twice a week. The mostly over 50 years old participants, mostly from underserved communities, can be involved for 1 to 3 hours in floor and pool exercises as well as discussions. The goal is to rebuild women’s physical, emotional, and spiritual strength.
