A.I.R. (Artists in Residence, Inc.) was the first women's cooperative gallery in the country. It was founded in 1972 as a response to the resistance of the art world to art made by women. It is a non-profit organization supported and run by its membership, comprised of twenty New York City artist-members and fifteen affiliate members from around the country. Located in SoHo's gallery district, A.I.R. is an alternative to commercial galleries. It's mission is to advance the status of women artists by exhibiting work of the highest quality and by providing leadership and a sense of community to women. This mission is fulfilled through exhibitions of work by members and in non-member invitational, curated and juried shows.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded by Ethel Hedgemen Lyle, along with fifteen other young women in 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., making it the oldest international Greek-letter organization in America by and for black women. Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated in 1913 and has grown from one undergraduate group to an international service organization. Tau Omega is the oldest graduate chapter in the New York area, established in May of 1925. Tau Omega provides tutoring for our youth, and scholarships for college bound women; it sponsors health forums, books for babies and many other programs which support our international targets of education, health, arts and culture, economic development and the black family.

Through offering workshops that include visual, performing and literary arts, The Creative Center cultivates a community of support in which people with cancer improve their lives through creativity as they meet the challenges of illness, treatment and survivorship. The Creative Center Artist-in-Residence Program offers art workshops at the patient's bedside in seven New York City hospitals, offering an antidote to the anxiety, pain and boredom that is often a part of the hospital experience. The Creative Center exhibits the work of professional and non-professional artists who are cancer survivors, both to support the artists and to increase the public awareness of the depths and diversity of artistic expression in those who are too often viewed as representatives of their disease rather than unique individuals.

The Million Mom March is a national, non-partisan, grassroots, chapter-based organization dedicated to preventing gun death and injury and supporting victims and survivors of gun violence. It was founded by mothers who want to protect their children from gun violence.
The New York chapters, like others across the country, focus on education and advocacy to seek responsible limits on gun access and use. In May 2000, more than 750 thousand people marched in Washington DC and other cities to demonstrate their support for sensible gun laws. A new march is planned for May 9, 2004.

The Women's Sports Foundation gives girls and women the information they need to make the most of their sports opportunities and to gain more opportunities where they do not currently exist. The Foundation is a national non-profit, member-based organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for girls and women in sports and fitness through education, advocacy, recognition and grants. Established in 1974, the foundation seeks to create an educated public that encourages female participation and supports gender equality in sports.

Founded 25 years ago, WTS is dedicated to excellence in transportation through the achievement and success of women. WTS is a national organization of more that 3,500 transportation professionals - both women and men. The GNY Chapter, one of 35 chapters nationally, is currently the largest chapter with over 500 members. The WTS-GNY offers a variety of services and activities to its members including job bank and resume services, professional development opportunities, monthly programs discussing current issues in transportation, newsletters, an annual Transportation Expo featuring Women/ Minority-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises, the annual awards recognizing employers, women and members who embody WTS's goal, three scholarships for women preparing to enter the transportation field, a mentoring program, and a leadership training program.

The Women's Venture Fund serves to increase the independence of and expand the opportunities for women. It is the first independent institution in New York City to combine lending and equity infusion with a comprehensive business training and support network. The mission is to expand entrepreneurial opportunities for women. The Women's Venture Fund funds micro-enterprises through peer-lending partnerships, makes direct loans for growth, provides comprehensive business training, organizes post-loan mentoring and support, and builds bridges to new business opportunities for women.

The Young Survival Coalition (YSC) is the only international, non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the concerns and issues that are unique to young women and breast cancer. Through action, advocacy and awareness, the YSC seeks to educate the medical, research, breast cancer and legislative communities and to persuade them to address breast cancer in women 40 and under. The YSC also serves as a point of contact for young women living with breast cancer.

Founded in 1888 under the leadership of Harriett Judson, the YWCA of Brooklyn plays an important role in the development and growth of the community and the women, girls and families of Brooklyn. The organization's mission is to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision of peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The Y sponsors a host of special classes and programs for women as well as providing child care facilities, youth programs, a residence for single women and vocational training.

For 131 years the YWCA-NYC has provided a myriad of services to women, girls, families and communities of New York City. Over 25,000 people a year come to our Manhattan location, Flushing and Harlem branches, eight child care centers and numerous off-site programs throughout the NYC's boroughs. Our members and participants range in age from infant to 90+ years old. Our population is broad based, not limited by neighborhood, description, need or economic status. The YWCA offers a variety of services and activities through our Centers - Center for Girls, Center for Seniors, Center for Health and Fitness Center for Arts and Culture, Center for Children, Angela Perez Center for Individuals with Disabilities and the Center for Workforce Development.
