Elinor Guggenheimer Lifetime Achievement Award
Elly Guggenheimer, whose vision for a non-partisan coalition of women’s organizations resulted
in NYWA, continues to be an inspiration to women throughout New York. One of the city’s most
eminent civic leaders, she was an activist for more than half a century, working to improve
conditions especially for women, children and the elderly. She energized others to push
aside barriers that stood in the way of people achieving their highest potential. In honor of
her indomitable spirit and unflagging energy, we present this year’s Elinor Guggenheimer Lifetime
Achievement Award to Jane Fonda.
Jane Fonda, Elinor Guggenheimer Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Having enjoyed tremendous success as a stage and screen
actress, Jane Fonda now focuses much of her time on
activism and social change. Ms. Fonda is a member of the
Women & Foreign Policy Advisory Committee of the Council
on Foreign Relations; the board of Women’s Media Center,
which she co-founded in 2004; and she sits on the board of
V-Day: Until The Violence Stops, a global effort to stop violence
against women. She was also named a Goodwill Ambassador
for the United Nations Population Fund. Ms. Fonda is an
avid reader, hiker, fly fisherwoman and yoga enthusiast.
Gloria Steinem, Presenter
Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor, and feminist activist.
She travels in this and other countries as an organizer and
lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of
equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of
sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as
roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures
of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for
peace and justice. Ms. Steinem co-founded the Women’s
Media Center with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan in 2005.
